Course for advanced knowledge of spoken and written standard Modern Hebrew with emphasis on Modern Hebrew literature and language, Israeli newspapers and Israeli television programs. Communication skills are exercised by means of class discussions, oral presentations, compositions and written reports on stories.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. Prerequisite: HEBR 405 or equivalent.

HEBR 5515 Adv Modern Hebrew II
Section Info:
: Is Israel an apartheid state? What is BDS?How do Reform Jews handle Orthodox Judaism autonomy in Israel? How come the majority of Haredi Jews don't serve in the military? Are there black Jews? Can Israel remain Jewish and democratic? What are the different ethnic groups in the state of Israel? What happened on October 7th, 2023 and how did this affect Israel and the entire Middle East? Students will explore these issues through a combination of reading, viewing, and discussion. By examining various perspectives and sources, students will engage with the implications of these topics for the international community, the United States, and their own personal perspectives. The discussions will be conducted in English for CNRC 3515 students and in Hebrew for HEBR 5515, allowing for a nuanced exploration of the topics in both languages. This section is offered through the BTAA Course Share Program hosted by the University of Minnesota and will be video-conference/Zoom/online taught for participating universities. Student(s) should coordinate with instructor for Zoom Link.
