Section Info:
This course is intended to introduce students to some religions from the Middle East, from antiquity until the 8th century AD. It explores the history, origins, rituals, fundamental principles, central beliefs, and practices of each major religion in the Middle East. Variations within religions will be studied within the context of their expression in the Middle East. Students employ a multidisciplinary approach to religious study, including literary criticism, anthropology, psychology, phenomenology, and other tools, to examine the significance of religious thought and expression within each religion. Students develop a unique expertise in several religions’ traditions. This requires becoming familiar with the relevant historical and cultural background of some religions in the Middle East.
