Topic Title: Sentence Processing in a Second Language This seminar will provide an overview of second language sentence processing, which is increasingly important in the field of second language acquisition more generally. Two broad approaches will be covered: research that seeks to understand how second language learners comprehend sentences (primarily written) and longer texts in real time and research that examines the relationship between processing and learning. A series of different theoretical frameworks and key issues will be discussed within each of the two areas. This course is ideal for those looking to conduct research on second language acquisition using psycholinguistic methods and perspectives, but will also be of interest to those who are interested in second language research in general but not necessarily with a focus on processing. The course will be taught in English.

The emphasis will be on a critical evaluation of current methodologies, with a focus on scientific reproducibility and transparency. As a prerequisite, students are expected to be familiar with basic statistical terms and inferential statistics. The course will utilize the R software environment for teaching.
