This term’s advanced field methods course will investigate the origins of the oceanic crust as a major component of Plate Tectonic Theory. We will focus on the Troodos Ophiolite of Cyprus, recognized as a world-class exposure of oceanic crust constructed during seafloor spreading. Comparisons of Troodos with other important ophiolite exposures and submarine tectonic windows will build a sophisticated understanding of the complexities of crustal construction in the mid-ocean ridge setting. The course will center around a 8-day field trip (plus travel days) to the island nation of Cyprus to visit exposures of the entire ophiolite sequence from marine sediments through lavas, the underlying dike complex, deeper crustal intrusive bodies, the Moho and the lithospheric mantle. Field trip fee required. The field trip fee does not include airfare or other transportation costs, and these costs are the responsibility of the student.
