SP25 ENGL 564 - Seminar in Lit Modes and Genres - Scholarly Writing Workshop - Gordon Hutner - This course focuses on the kind of writing you can expect to do in your scholarly career. To that end, it specifically addresses the requirements and best practices in writing journal articles, and we will be workshopping examples of each student’s drafts of an essay to be shaped into a submission to a scholarly journal. Rather than try to write something new, students should draw from existing work: a seminar paper, panel paper, or, for some, a dissertation chapter. These essays will go through multiple drafts over the course of the eight weeks, so students should plan on an intensive writing experience. We will also discuss topics such as how to choose a journal for your article-to-be and professional etiquette in corresponding with editors. At the same time, we will also be address other sorts of writing and formats, like fellowship applications, that you’re likely to face at some point in your careers.
