Section Title:
Adv Sep for Energy, Sus. & Env
Section Info:
Special Topics: Advanced Separations for Energy, Sustainability, and Environment. The course will cover both the fundamental principles, mathematical modeling, and state-of-art application of traditional and emerging separation technologies. Topics will include new field-driven separations (e.g. electrodialysis), advanced analytical separations, as well as industrially-relevant applications of adsorption and multi-stage equilibrium analysis, chromatography including theory for simulated moving bed SMBs and their applications in pharmaceutical, and new trends in downstream processing steps for biomanufacturing. We will also cover a range of separation operations used in mining and mineral extraction. We will discuss new emerging separation techniques and research challenges, including solar-driven and electrochemically-driven platforms for a variety of challenges ranging from water purification to carbon dioxide capture. It is recommended that students who take this course have completed or are currently enrolled in CHBE 422. Meets with CHBE 494 XS.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
