In this course, we study twentieth-century films that construct images of China. The films we study were produced in the United States, Mainland China, Hong Kong, and the Republic of China (Taiwan). To understand the diversity of these constructed images, we examine the historical circumstances under which the films they inhabit were produced and received by audiences in the United States. The primary issues that will demand our attention in films such as Frank Capra’s The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933) or Henry Koster’s Flower Drum Song (1961) or Wayne Wang’s The Joy Luck Club (1989) involve gender, notably the link commonly drawn between China and concepts of the feminine; the juxtaposition of cultural difference that can disrupt our assumptions about China; and the interdependence of the local and the global brought forth in the geopolitical or transnational positioning of the Chinese subject that experiences migration, immigration, and diaspora.
