Section Title:
Race, Science, and Technology
Section Info:
This course will be held in the conference room at the Department of Asian American Studies, 1208 W Nevada, Urbana. This course explores intersection of racism and science and technology in the United States. Far from an apolitical or objective form of knowledge, science has been deeply shaped by historical and contemporary structures of racism—such as slavery, settler colonialism, immigration, militarism, policing, and more. We will study how racism has been persistent across fields of scientific knowledge production and how technology has often been used to advance systems of discrimination and inequality. In doing so, we will examine how science and racism are intertwined with other intersecting social and cultural identities: such as gender, class, sexuality, disability, and citizenship. We will also explore what justice-oriented technological approaches might look like, and how we can collectively explore new ways to envision the relationship between science, technology, and the social world.
