But real engineering applications often subject materials, components, and structures to extreme conditions including high strain rates, corrosion or hydrogen, radiation, high pressure, or microgravity. These environments can alter the compositions and microstructures of materials, causing severe degradation to the properties, mechanics, and performance of components. This course will review these critical degradation and failure modes of engineering materials, examine theories and models for the altered material mechanics in extreme environments, and evaluate how codes and standards account for material degradation and evolution in extreme service environments. Students will carry out a semester-long project focusing on a degradation mode or extreme environment of their choice. Prerequisite is ME 330 or equivalent. Restriction(s): Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
