Topic: In this class, we will examine the nature and import of emergence and related notions such as dependence, autonomy, and realization. What is emergence? Is there such a thing as strong emergence? What does emergence relate? What principles are true of it: it is irreflexive, asymmetric, and transitive? How does emergence relate to other notions like grounding, fundamentality and causality? We will also investigate the ontology of groups and how facts about emergence apply, if at all, to them. 500-level courses are graduate courses, and are intended for graduate students only.
