Owl Migration & Education
Section Info:
We will conduct research on the migration of Northern Saw-whet Owls in central Illinois. The students will be part of the research in which we capture, band, and attach radio transmitters to owls. The students will also learn about automated radio telemetry and how to analyze large telemetry datasets. Students will learn the basic principles of scientific communication and will design and host outreach events for the public regarding the ecology and conservation of Northern Saw-whet Owls. As owls are nocturnal, this course will be in the evenings on weeknights, with some meetings on campus and some at natural areas 30-45 minutes from campus. There will be some weeks in which the research will be conducted on two nights and the students can pick which night they want to attend. Transportation will be provided to off-campus sites.
