In the last 20 years, there has been a proliferation in historical research on cities of South Asia. Rather than being treated as complex urban formations in their own right, the cities of South Asia have frequently been reduced to deviations of their rationally ordered counterparts in the metropolitan west. This course will explore South Asian cities mainly through the collective actions and agency of colonial subjects. These include studies of urban culture focusing on a burgeoning urban middle class, the activities of traders, private proprietors and builders, working class histories of industrial cities, accounts of street politics and urban neighborhoods, shaped by popular movements and religious violence. None of these stories, however, can be told without acknowledging the involvement of the colonial state in the everyday life of its subjects. Our goal is not only to deflect from euro-centric approaches to the urban question, but also to forefront the agency of colonized subjects in the constitution of colonial landscapes as well as colonial histories.
