Section Title:
Becoming Who We Are: Feminism
Section Info:
This course is an introduction to the history of feminism and to feminist cultural theory, with parallels to other social justice movements from the 18th century to the present. We will read well- and lesser-known texts in the history of feminism along with fiction and poetry, with the goal of understanding feminisms in larger social, political, and economic contexts. We will consider the variety within feminisms and in feminist “waves” throughout history. By the end of this course, you will: understand what feminism is and has been; be able to integrate aspects of feminist thought into interpretations of social and political phenomena in the world; be able to perform a robust close reading of a text; have acquired familiarity not only with feminism, but with other significant movements in global thought since the Enlightenment. Restriction(s): Restricted to Chancellor's Scholar-CHP Honors students. Non-CHP students may petition to take the class by following the directions on the CHP website at https://honors.illinois.edu/curriculum/edu/curriculum and emailing the petition form to chp@illinois.edu.
