Course title: English in South Korea: Globalization, Symbolic Values, Policies, Discourse, and Teaching Opportunities/Techniques This course is offered online via BTAA CourseShare (Prof. Susan Strauss, Professor of Asian Studies, Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, and Education at Penn State University) and will be taught synchronously via zoom. Note that the class will follow the academic calendar of Penn State University. This course offers hands-on experience exploring the role and impact of English in South Korea, focusing on its educational and societal use. With an interdisciplinary approach, it examines the history of English language policies, current trends, and its presence in public discourse, including popular media, advertisements, and linguistic landscapes. Students will critically analyze how English is integrated into Korean society, from hybridized "Konglish" to its cultural and professional significance. The course includes an introduction to Korean language and culture, as well as practical techniques for designing innovative English lessons for Korean learners. No prior knowledge of Korean is required.
