In this course, we will study a wide range of textile and fiber arts forms across Turtle Island (North America) and the ways in which they embody cultural knowledge systems and ways of being in the world. From the Arctic North to the Desert Southwest, we will consider the rich and ongoing histories of various basketry, beadwork, quillwork, weaving, embroidery, applique, dyeing, and textile painting techniques as they relate to kinship, gender, trade, and migration—and as they contribute to an expanding global and anti-colonial contemporary art discourse.
