Section Title:
Monsters
Section Info:
The freakish, horrible, mysterious, odd, grotesque, mutant, bizarre, demonic, alien, anomalous, aberrant and monstrous, by turns terrifying, sympathetic and even cute, populate our art, literature, film, and propaganda. They haunt our consciousness and telegraph our anxieties, with consequential psychological, social and political effects. Starting with an examination of a variety of monsters in visual culture, this hybrid studio/seminar will engage students in both critical inquiry and studio production on the topic of the monstrous. Building on basic drawing materials, methods and skills, students will produce works of art in response to material presented in class (no writing!). They will refine personal, artistic expression in multiple drawing media while producing their own versions of the monstrous.
