Section Title:
Digital Cultures Communication
Section Info:
With the widespread availability of digital technology such as smartphones, gaming systems, and computers, digitally-mediated forms of communication have become part of our everyday lives. We interact with people through video games, blogs, and social media platforms that speak to our interests, and these digital “spaces” develop distinctive forms of communication in the process. This course explores digitally-mediated communication practices as central features of digital cultures, asking what we can learn about people, societies, and technology by studying communication in these contexts.

Section Title:
Collaborative Methodologies
Section Info:
This course will introduce students to the key pillars of collaborative methodologies. More than a set of proscriptive methods, we will learn and discuss key anthropological methods, participant observation, and associated methods that can be used, and in many cases reframed when collaborating, walking with, and standing with communities of color. We will study the ethics and techniques for planning and carrying out such forms of knowledge production. Students will undertake a collaborative research project and become familiar with basic ethical issues, informed consent, writing research proposals, formulating community-based MOUs, and sharing results with research partners and key stakeholders. For this semester we will be working with Pixan Konob' and Indigenous on the Move Language Justice Collective on a survey and county-level Indigenous Language Campaign.
