An objective approach towards critical systems thinking and towards collaborative analysis across multiple disciplines for the development, production, preparation, consumption, and utilization of food, feed, fiber and energy, while managing the disposal and reuse of byproducts, within complex socioeconomic, ecological and environmental systems. Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of modern crop, livestock, and other agricultural production systems, and consider the future challenges and opportunities in producing enough for a growing world population.

This course uses a guided, discovery-based learning approach designed for students to understand, apply, and analyze key principles of food and environmental systems: what food is, where it comes from, how it gets to our plate, what happens to food waste, and how it is interacts with the surrounding environment. Students will develop an understanding of the interrelatedness and interdependence of food and environmental system components. Students will also “experience the food system” through activities related to food production, processing, retail, and post-consumption operations. Students will gain foundational skills in systems-thinking and leadership. This course is for students majoring in Sustainability in Food and Environmental Systems or other majors with approval from the instructor.
