Music and Society

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 3 hours.

Examination of the social context, function and meaning of music/music-making in one or more communities, from one or more areas of the world, in one or more time periods. May address music in relation to such social issues as gender and sexualities, ethnicity, politics, etc.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 hours if topic varies. Prerequisite: MUS 313 and MUS 314, and junior standing in music; or consent of instructor.

From Muddy Waters to Liz Phair, the state of Illinois has been home to diverse forms of music making throughout its history. This course surveys a wide range of music from Illinois, including examples from the blues, jazz, classical, alternative rock, country, house, hip hop, and Indigenous musical traditions. We will also give special consideration to music from Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois, such as American Football, LeJaren Hiller, and the 1985 Farm Aid concert. Against the backdrop of relevant historical and social frameworks, we will develop a richer understanding of music’s role in Illinois social life as well as how Illinois musicians have advanced and responded to developments in the world of music at large. The class will consist of weekly prepared readings, listening, and viewing; hands-on archival research; and a final paper or creative project on an approved topic of the student’s choice. Graduate students will complete a more in-depth final project. Restriction(s): Restricted to students in the Music department.
