Section Info:
Substance Use Treatment in Social Work. Introduces selected counseling approaches for substance use disorders. Begins with an overview of the causes of substance use disorders, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment planning. Focuses on treatment theories and techniques applied to counseling people struggling with substance use. Selected theories include 12 Step approaches, cognitive and behavioral theories, family systems theory, harm reduction, and motivational interviewing. Special attention is devoted to applying substance use treatment models with diverse populations. Class meets first 8 weeks of semester.

Section Info:
SOCW 561 E: Issues Surrounding Mental Illness in Library and Social Service Settings. This course meets the first 8 weeks of the semester. This 2-credit course provides a humanistic approach to and overview of common issues surrounding mental illness symptoms in library and social service settings. Students will learn about various mental illness symptoms, their etiology and intersecting contexts (race, class, age, sexual orientation gender identity), and resulting experiences of stigma, exclusion, and discrimination, and about common countertransference issues and strategies for engaging and addressing the diverse needs of patrons/clients so as to avoid compassion fatigue.

Motivational Interviewing
Section Info:
This course focuses on building students' skills in Motivational Interviewing, an evidence-based method for talking with people who are ambivalent about change. This course differentiates the counseling method from other counseling approaches and teaches students the practice theory upon which the counseling method is built. Ample time is devoted to practicing skills via role plays. Skills developed include reflective listening skills, formulation of questions, and directive methods that are distinct in MI. Special attention is devoted to applying Motivational Interviewing with diverse populations and across varied target problems.
