1st 8-Week Class. Introduces the fundamental principles of inclusive design specifically in the Recreation, Sport and Tourism arena and prepares the learner for further exploration, study and focus on all aspects of lifespan development. The course discusses inclusive and universal design, laws and standards, facility design, programming/events, policies and procedures, communication methods and workplace culture. Students will examine the types and ranges of user identities that contribute to the diversity of the stakeholders in our communities. Meets with RST 585.

Course will examine historical foundations and contemporary challenges emanating from athletic programs operating within higher education institutions. An analysis of relevant literature and current media accounts, along with a dialogue from industry leaders will provide a unique insight to the expectations facing the next generation of collegiate administrators. Topics include: Historical Foundations of Intercollegiate Athletics; Fan Engagement in the Evolving Sport Landscape; NCAA Governance Models / Contemporary Issues; Name, Image, & Likeness & the role of the Collective Organization; Financial Management / Capital Programs; Perspectives on Media Rights; Equity Issues and College Athletics; and, Organizational Management Strategies.

Outdoor Recreation Consortium
Section Info:
Course Title: Outdoor Recreation Consortium – Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The purpose of the Outdoor Recreation Consortium is to provide students with hands-on exposure to outdoor recreation and natural resource management in the context of Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GSMNP). This course is designed to increase students' understanding and appreciation of outdoor recreation resources, the agencies managing those resources, the management strategies used, and the factors affecting management, including issues related to the nearby “gateway communities” and the park’s surrounding environment. The course format is one that focuses on problem solving, encourages a high level of interaction among participating students, faculty and park managers, and gives participants an opportunity to connect with nature. This course has a non-refundable class fee, and includes a required six-day trip to GSMNP (March 17 to March 22), where students will stay at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute, a nature education center within the park boundaries.
