Section Title:
Algorithms in ADV & Media
Section Info:
Algorithms in Advertising and Media: Algorithms play an increasingly important role in the creation and purchase of digital advertising and other media. Programmatic buying, profiling of consumers using traces of their web activity, behavior prediction, and personalization can make advertising more effective. At the same time, there is lack of transparency in how algorithms work and what their impact on consumers and advertising effectiveness is. This course will tackle questions related to the role of algorithms in today’s advertising and media. We will discuss issues like the role of algorithms in message development and delivery, ad effectiveness, consumers’ theories of algorithms, societal, ethical, and legal issues. We will read literature from advertising, psychology, communication, human-computer interaction, and marketing. Meets with ADV 594 A (63887).
