An examination of leadership from historical, political, and sociological perspectives through a study of how a natural disaster impacted a community within the United States. Participation in a community service trip during spring break may be required.

Additional fees may apply. See Class Schedule. May be repeated in separate terms to a maximum of 6 hours, if topics vary. Prerequisite: Restricted to LAS James Scholars Honors program students.

This class will focus on the local and national response to Hurricane Katrina and the rebuilding of the city of New Orleans from a social change perspective. It’s an examination of leadership from historical, political, and sociological perspectives. This mid eight-week course meets Feb 2 through March 29, with a required weeklong service project in New Orleans during Spring Break (March 11 – 15). Honors scholarships will offset all course fees. Restricted to LAS James Scholars Honors program students.
