We model our work on the National Public Radio tradition of evocative public interest journalism, producing stories that are deeply reported, accurate and imaginative. You will be presented with exemplary audio content upon which you will model your own storytelling. Using the audio gathering & production techniques and software taught during the course, you will produce several short “wraps” and a “feature,” with a goal of having these stories broadcast on public radio. Students will have the opportunity to travel to Sierra Leone during spring break to document the transformative work being done by grassroots non-profits in Sierra Leone as they provide menstrual hygiene kits and reproductive education in remote areas of the country. As period poverty is a global issue not constrained by international borders, we will likewise purposefully frame the issue globally, drawing parallels between the hundreds of millions of people everywhere, of all genders, for whom menstrual shaming brings societal or economic pressures to bear on themselves and/or their families. A course fee will be assessed for students in this course. Prerequisites: JOUR215 and permission of instructors. Email instructors for more information on joining the course.

From early twentieth century publishers who saw the popularization of science knowledge as critical to democracy, to Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and beyond, the course critically examines pathbreakers, icons, and classic works pivotal to the field’s development. Science journalism’s historical impact, including important regulatory reforms that changed business and the economy, and benefitted the consuming public, are also studied. The written result is immersive storytelling. The methodology examines contemporary social phenomena through the lives of individuals and families. The student will study an actual application of the methodology in the book, When Children Want Children, which is an examination of adolescent childbearing among high school students in a very poor neighborhood of Washington, D. C. You will learn the techniques by doing an actual project of your choosing. You will have to recruit a participant, interview the person extensively with digital recorder, transcribe the interviews, and write a midterm and final story/narrative based on the interviews. Please speak with your academic advisor, or contact media-ssc@illinois.edu with any questions. If seats remain, they will be opened to campus by 12pm on November 15. Race, Ethnicity, and Gender in Journalism: The course begins fifty-odd years ago with President Johnson’s National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders’ report that, in part, indicted American media after examining the underlying causes of urban riots between 1964 and 1967. In the report’s section, The Communications Media, Ironically, Have Failed to Communicate, the Commission charged “that the news media have failed to analyze and report adequately on racial problems in the United States and, as a related matter, to meet the Negro’s legitimate expectations of journalism.” We will examine the fits and starts in American media that followed this harsh assessment through the last century right up to the public editorial apology on September 27, 2020 by the Los Angeles Times for its coverage of Black and Latino Angelenos. The editorial read that The Times “often displayed at best a blind spot, at worst an outright hostility, for the city’s nonwhite population, one both rooted and reflected in a shortage of Indigenous, Black, Latino, Asian and other people of color in its newsroom.” *Eligible for the Journalism Minor: https://media.illinois.edu/degrees-programs/journalism-minor Restriction(s): Not intended for students with Freshman class standing.
