Gut microbiomes are increasingly being recognized for the roles they play in mediating host behavioral phenotypes. Therefore, microbiome research is quickly becoming a necessary part of understanding the ecology and evolution of animal behaviors. This seminar course will explore this new, exciting field of research by focusing on insect microbiomes and the host behaviors they mediate. Through short lectures and discussion of recent literature, we will examine what is currently known about the diversity of insect hosts and behaviors influenced by gut microbiomes, and the mechanisms by which gut microbes mediate these behaviors.
