Alternating poetry and prose, concentrates on a major author from one of the following areas: epic, history, lyric poetry, oratory, drama, or philosophy. Areas normally follow this sequence in successive years.

May be repeated to a maximum of 20 hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: GRK 491 or equivalent.

In addition to close readings of relevant texts by Plato and Xenophon, we will spend considerable time looking at the portrayal of Socrates in Old Comedy; evidence and questions concerning ancient Greek religion generally (and, e.g., the Delphic Oracle in particular); accounts of the relationship between Socrates and Alcibiades; etc. Restriction(s): Restricted to Graduate - Urbana-Champaign.
