Alternating poetry and prose, concentrates on a major author from one of the following areas: epic, history, lyric poetry, oratory, drama, or philosophy. Areas normally follow this sequence in successive years.

May be repeated to a maximum of 20 hours if topics vary. Prerequisite: GRK 491 or equivalent.

The Trial of Socrates
Section Info:
Topic: In this seminar, we will use ancient accounts of Socrates’ trial to structure a close and careful investigation into the historical figure of Socrates and his cultural and intellectual milieu. In addition to close readings of relevant texts by Plato and Xenophon, we will spend considerable time looking at the portrayal of Socrates in Old Comedy; evidence and questions concerning ancient Greek religion generally (and, e.g., the Delphic Oracle in particular); accounts of the relationship between Socrates and Alcibiades; etc.
