Section Title:
Writing the end of all times
Section Info:
Writing the end of all times: Eschatology in Enlightenment and Romanticism. The graduate seminar examines literary (particularly secularized) interpretations and revisions of the Apocalypse from late Enlightenment to late Romanticism. It focuses on relatively short texts (including works by Mendelssohn, Lessing, Schiller, Jean Paul, Kleist, Günderrode, Brentano) and their relationship to the Book of Revelation. On one hand, this allows for the discussion of intertextual connections to a central document in Western religious thought. On the other hand, close readings will be conducted to explore the (a-)logic of the literary portrayal of the end times. Taught by incoming Max Kade Professor Jakob Heller.
