Spring 2024 FR 573 Sociabilités au 18e siècle, dans la fiction et les écrits personnels. Selected topics in philosophical and literary works as well as personal texts. The focus will be on the concept of sociability, on the changing representations of social classes or "conditions”, and on the development of new conceptions of the public sphere and the private self in the long eighteenth century. Writers will include Marivaux, Prévost, Graffigny, Diderot, Rousseau, Mercier, Rétif, Charrière, Madame Roland. Course taught in French. Primary readings in French, secondary readings in French and English.
