Although the Tale of Genji is more familiar to English-language readers, no literary form has had a bigger impact on the development of Japanese culture than classical poetry (waka). We explore waka’s rich and manifold intersections with the visual arts, calligraphy, religion, modern nation-making, and contemporary popular culture while honing our skills in cross-media cultural analysis.
