Section Info:
Race and digital studies seeks to understand and illuminate how race, ethnicity, and identity shape and are shaped by digital technology. This survey course introduces the students to this field's core concepts (the social construction of race, race as technology, how digital tools are employed within traditionally marginalized communities, etc.). In the interest of intersectionality, this course pays special attention to the way race and gender operate as a compounded inequality.

Media and Crime
Section Info:
Depictions of crime, police, and the criminal legal system more broadly are ubiquitous throughout our mass media ecosystem. How are these various objects portrayed across different media, and what effect do they have on the attitudes of media users? In this course, students will explore the sociopolitical implications of news coverage and entertainment depictions of crime and the criminal legal system. We will also examine how media industry practices and the activities of political elites at various levels of government contribute to such depictions.
