Section Info:
Modernism, Then and Now Understandings of nineteenth-century French art were fundamentally reshaped in the 1970s and 1980s by critiques (e.g., Marxist, institutional, and feminist) of the prevailing definitions of modernism. This seminar examines these interventions and their scholarly legacies, but it also asks how newer approaches (e.g., materialism, environmental studies, and reconsiderations of gender, sexuality, and race) are transforming our understanding of modernism today.
