Statistics for Linguistics
Section Info:
This course is an overview of statistical analysis for linguistics. While no prior background in statistics and R is assumed, students are encourage to get some basic R programming knowledge before the course to facilitate their learning and understanding . The goal of the course is for students to understand statistical concepts and analyses, in order to do analyses that are reasonable and appropriate. Focus will be placed on a critical analysis of current methods, as well as on scientific reproducibility and transparency. The course will begin with an overview of descriptive statistics, and will continue to hypothesis testing and linear regression. The course will be taught using the R software environment.

Meets with LING 506 Topic: “Computational Sociolinguistics” This course introduces both computational models of social phenomena in language and the critical evaluation of computational models of language from a sociolinguistic perspective. The intended audience is either (i) students in computational linguistics who necessarily work with social phenomena and (ii) students in sociolinguistics who are interested in critically evaluating language models and their applications. Topics include linguistic variation and dialectology, language attitudes and perceptual dialectology, code-switching, low-resource languages and dialects, and sources of social bias in computational models.
