Section Info:
This course is a thematic survey of Yiddish literature that introduces students to great Jewish storytellers such as Rebbe Naḥman of Bratslav, Sholem Aleichem, I.L. Peretz, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Mimi Pinzón, Chava Rosenfarb, and others. Throughout the semester we will discuss different ways these artists wrestled with Jewish modernity through the art of storytelling. We will read across genres, including short stories, excerpts from novels, poems, songs, and film created by Yiddish figures around the world. Taught in English with texts in English translation (Yiddish originals available by request).
