Tropical Forest Ecology
Section Info:
An introduction to the biodiversity of neotropical forest ecosystems. During the second half of the Fall semester we will review each week topics on the biogeographic history of tropical forests, theories on the origin and maintenance of their extraordinary species diversity, and the on the political and cultural history of Panama. Over a 11-day visit to to Panama over winter break, we will visit mangrove, lowland, premontane and cloud forest sites, explore the forest canopy from the gondola of a construction crane, travel by boat to Barro Colorado Island, and meet with local researchers and farmers. 1 hour discussion per week from 27 October to 7 December plus a field trip to Panama during Winter Break (5-15 January). A Program fee is charged to cover the cost of the trip. Students must have the approval of instructor prior to registering for course and possess a valid passport.
