In this course, students will explore important nuances pertaining to the history, nature, character, and challenge of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Minority Serving Institutions (MSI). There will also be an emphasis on the historical and contemporary discourses surrounding HBCUs in this course, as well as discussions about other MSIs such as Tribal Colleges, Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institutions (AANAPISIs). Their complex historical and contemporary placements in higher education realms and these institutions' abilities to ensure the success of racial/ethnic minorities within higher education, economic contributions, organizational culture and practices, and funding conversations will be grappled with extensively.
