Engineering First-Year Experience Seminars

SHOW FINAL EXAM SCHEDULE

Credit: 1 TO 2 hours.

Provides first-year students with opportunities to participate in interdisciplinary courses designed to help explore what is means to be an engineer and develop skills required in the engineering workplace, be it team dynamics, leadership skills, intercultural competency, or communication techniques. Students will explore topic areas offered as separate sections under the course heading. Each section uses a hands-on, interactive, discussion/team-based approach. The courses use active learning exercises in addition to reflections, readings, and project work.

May be repeated in the same or separate terms for a maximum of 4 hours.

Special Approval: Instructor Approval Required Credit: 2 hours Section Title: Honors Comm Eng & Dev-Jamaica Section Info: This course and study tour provides students with the fundamental understanding of global community engagement. Students will study real world, community-identified problems in sites across the globe. Under the guidance of local leaders and experts, students will collaborate with each other to complete a project for a community during the fall semester. Students will then meet and work firsthand with one of these rural community organizations in Jamaica during winter break. The course concludes with a service trip to Jamaica for nine days in January 2025.Enrollment in this section does not include travel costs, which must be paid separately. Estimated travel costs are ~$4600 and include the cost of round-trip airfare, ground transportation, lodging, meals, immunizations, international insurance, and in-country programming. This fee does not include personal miscellaneous expenses or the cost of a passport. Many scholarships are available. Special Approval: Instructor Approval Required Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Glbl Disaster Res-Puerto Rico Section Info: Through case studies, interactive projects, hands on activities, and study tours, students will learn about the cultural, political, and social factors for specific disaster-prone regions. Students will initiate their training in not only the design of, but also the assessment of the resilience of potential technological solutions when responding to current and anticipated challenges for regions under consideration. Students will work with local communities, aid organizations, and peer institutions in the identification and implementation of sustainable responses. The program travels one week in January 2025. Enrollment in this section does not include travel costs, which must be paid separately. Estimated program costs are ~$5300, which covers the cost of round-trip airfare, ground transportation, lodging, meals, immunizations, international insurance, and in-country programming. Credit: 1 hours Section Title: Sustainable Goods Section Info: This course introduces students to sustainable consumption and production with a focus on consumer goods and fast fashion. Students will learn from campus experts and global companies in the consumer goods industry. In the second half of the class, students will practice their skills in intercultural communication, teamwork, and project management by collaborating with Brazilian students to pitch a potential solution to a company’s real problem.
