Section Title:
Danc Tech Elec: Swing
Section Info:
Students will learn the basics of East Coast and West Coast Swing styles. Both of these dances trace their roots to the original swing dance, Lindy Hop. Lindy Hop was created in the late 1920s by African American youth at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. In the 1940s, Lindy Hop was simplified by ballroom dance schools to become Eastern Swing, later renamed as East Coast Swing. It’s a fun, upbeat dance, characterized by its bounce, back break, and a swing hip action. West Coast Swing was born in California in the 1940s, and it is an official California state dance. It is popular throughout North America, and is characterized by its smoothness (no bounce), and dancing “in a slot”. In both styles of swing, you will learn the basic steps and the ways to connect them to create simple choreographic patterns. Students will develop partner-dance skills in class and change partners often. Prerequisite: Restricted to dance majors. May be repeated.
