An array of questions arise for individuals who are negotiating close relationships (“Why did s/he do that?” “What should I say?” “Do I still want to be involved in this relationship?”). Communication is key to how people navigate the questions they have about participating in close relationships. Accordingly, this seminar will examine how individuals communicate when they are experiencing relational uncertainty.

In this seminar, we will review theoretical and empirical literature on human communication and complex organizations and the study of messages, interaction, and meaning making in the processes of organizing. The course will focus on the ontological, epistemological, and axiological commitments common in organizational communication scholarship, and readings will emphasize empirical examples that take up topics such as organizational structure, the communicative constitution of organizations, identity and identification, discourse, organizational change, technology, institutions, networks, and power. We will tailor readings and assignments to students’ interests and professional goals, and the bulk of class time will focus on discussion of readings.

The course focuses on message factors (e.g., content, style, structure) used in message design, expected effects from such factors, and quantitative methods used to assess message effects. Readings include research from a variety of communication subareas (e.g., health communication, political communication), as well as related disciplines (e.g., media psychology, social psychology, advertising).

In this seminar, we will explore questions about communication, the media, and public opinion. We will cover historical work on public opinion that addresses what public opinion is and how it is constructed. We will question how public opinion is formed, how it is structured, and how it can change. We also will explore how public opinion functions in a democratic system. Special emphasis will be placed on investigating how communication and media shape, and are shaped by, public opinion. Theoretical and empirical research from political science, sociology, social psychology, and communication will be discussed.
