This class will consider ethical concepts and codes of conduct in Jainism, a religion which has been described as “ethical realism.” We will examine how Jain thinkers laid out ethical principles for ascetics and lay practitioners in antiquity, including in narrative literature, and the evolution of Jain ethical engagements with modern social and political issues including environmental and animal rights activism, business and finance, and medicine and bioethics.
