Examines the politics of national parks in the United States, including creation of parks, local support or opposition to parks, and park policy as well as policy questions such as the value of wilderness ecosystem management, endangered species protection, and role of parks in national identity and remembrance of events such as the Civil War, the Indian wars, or the civil rights movement.

This three-credit course provides a theoretical introduction to the concept of “wilderness,” along with the practical and political challenges that federal agencies face when managing wilderness areas in the national park system. Our four class sessions in the first half of Spring 2023 will explore the theory of wilderness, wilderness regulations, recreational management, the politics of national parks, and effects of these things on ecosystems and natural processes. We will also have an orientation session to help prepare you for the field experience. The course concludes with a ten-day field experience in Yellowstone National Park and adjacent national forest lands, including a seven-day backpacking trip. Permission of Campus Honors Program and instructor required. The four class sessions will meet in the Honors Classroom, Campus Honors House.
