Section Title:
Instructed Heritage Lang Acq
Section Info:
Instructed Heritage Language Acquisition: Although heritage languages have always been part of the linguistic landscape, for most of human history these languages have been ignored or even repressed and the focus of inquiry has been the extent to which minority language speakers learn the majority language. In recent years, however, there has been a burgeoning interest in minority languages (now spoken by about 20% of the US population) and heritage language acquisition. The focus of this class is what happens when heritage speakers receive instruction in their heritage language. How are the instruction and the outcomes similar to and different from what we see in second language acquisition? Do heritage learners respond to features of instruction such as corrective feedback in the same way that second language learners do? The main goal of the course is for students to read and critically analyze primary research on instructed heritage language acquisition with an eye toward developing their own research project in the area. Students will be part of a research apprenticeship, during which they will design an original research study in the field. If the course is full, students can add their names to the waitlist at go.illinois.edu/SPAN_waitlist
