Modern contributions to the science of microbiology; emphasizes the structure, function, and synthesis of informational macromolecules and on the role microorganisms have played in molecular biology.

3 undergraduate hours. 3 graduate hours. Prerequisite: MCB 300 and credit or concurrent registration in MCB 354, or consent of instructor.

Large eukaryotic organisms are like Fortune 500 companies and prokaryotes are like small businesses. As the case with small businesses, prokaryotes must innovate to survive. This course will cover the many innovative biological processes, including CRISPR-Cas systems, that have developed over a billion years of evolution in prokaryotic organisms. In addition to learning about biological and biochemical explanations in this course, you will study structures used to explain molecular mechanisms of these novel biological processes. You will also become familiar with crystal structures created by X-ray crystallography and the emerging revolution of structural biology, including AlphaFold and cryo-EM. This course is restricted to Biochemistry and MCB seniors and grad students. Restrictions will be removed December 1st.
