Section Info:
Linguistic Communities and Social Justice": What are the linguistic and social factors that contribute to being a part of a community? In this sociolinguistics seminar, we will critically address the concept of community within linguistic research. We will discuss the historical and contemporary applications of speech communities, communities of practice, perceptual communities, and digital communities, and how these intersect with theories in linguistic variation, bilingualism, social identity, racialization, and mediatization. Furthermore, we will consider how social justice efforts in linguistics intersect with the ever-changing community boundaries around languages, varieties, and speakers/signers. Students will be asked to present research articles, produce an original pilot research project, and propose a social justice component of their research through a grant writing exercise. This seminar is designed for students interested in person-centered and cross-linguistic approaches to language.
