Section Info:
This term’s advanced field methods course will center around a 10-day field trip to Hawai’i in mid-May following spring commencement ceremonies. The class will explore the geological systems that have formed and continue to modify the Hawaiian Islands. Topics will include but are not limited to: hotspot volcanism and the formation and evolution of the 5800 km-long Hawaiian-Emperor Seamount Chain; the development and life cycle of ocean island volcanoes; basaltic volcanoes and their physical features; hydrology and water resources of small islands; Hawaii’s coral reefs and the unique evolution of biodiversity at the Hawaiian Island chain. Students are responsible for airfare or other transportation costs to Hilo Hawaii for the field trip. Prerequisites: At least one 400-level geology course or permission of the instructor; registration is based on an application process due to limited space. Priority will be given to students with a strong record of coursework in geoscience and/or a particular need for taking the course in. 4 hrs.
