Social impact investing may be described as a bridge between two well-established disciplines, private equity and philanthropy. Like philanthropy, impact investing is driven by an intention to create a positive societal or environmental change in its investment sphere. Incorporating process methods of the private equity model, we will review direct investment strategies and consider various ways to leverage capital markets as part of mission-driven efforts. This course considers the perspective of both investor and manager/entrepreneur in seeking paths for solving intractable societal problems while generating financial return. Capital Funding for Growth Companies will provide students an understanding of the current capital market landscape, funding process and trends. This class will examine the range of middle-market companies’ capital requirements and objectives in relation to the available private equity and debt financing. Through specific examples, students will identify the appetites and expertise of middle-market investment banks and the skills and access to capital they provide their clients. Advanced Cases in Real Estate Investment will explore progressively more complex real estate investments and concepts using case studies including ownership and financing structures, distribution waterfalls and asset management challenges. The objective of this course is to prepare students for the CFA ESG certification exam. The goal is that each student sits for and passes the exam at the end of the semester. ESG is a trend and a theme that will carry through your entire careers. More than 50% of global AUM now tracks some sort of ESG benchmark. Asset owners are moving more toward these benchmarks which means asset managers as well as sell-side firms, will need to follow suit. Even individual clients are expressing some desire to have portfolios designed with ESG in mind. The certification will be your first step toward having the credentials to speak authoritatively on the subject of ESG with clients of all kinds. This course is for undergraduates who are in their senior year. There are no prerequisites. Students are expected to have a strong understanding of asset pricing, portfolio construction, and financial market mechanics. Restriction(s): Restricted to Undergrad - Urbana-Champaign.
