Foundational theories and practices of educational psychology, including learning and development.

2 or 3 undergraduate hours. 2 or 4 graduate hours. Approved for letter and S/U grading. May be repeated to a maximum of 8 hours. Undergraduate and graduate work load will be commensurate with the requirements.

Note: Meets educational psychology foundation requirement.

Students will learn about common research methodologies for studying games, features of educational games that contribute to learning, theoretical implications of games research, and key historical developments in the field. A variety of educational goals (cognitive, metacognitive, affective) and game genres will be considered. Course activities will involve presentation of research papers and discussion, game-based learning activities, experimental design groups, and a course project designed by the student.

Adol & Transition to Adulthood
Section Info:
Through a series of weekly assigned readings, students will co-lead active discussions around topics relevant to late adolescence and emerging adulthood (~16-29 years old). Topics will cover a range of issues commonly discussed in relation to this window of the lifespan, including the unique features of emerging adulthood, the development of identity and self-direction, the transition to and through college, and mental health. The course will culminate in the presentation of an adolescence/emerging adulthood-themed research proposal that students will be encouraged to pursue after the course has ended.
