This course offers a critical survey of key narratives by Joseph Conrad dating from his “major phase,” including the novel Nostromo, the novella Heart of Darkness, the quasi-autobiographical A Personal Record, and a number of classic short stories. Conrad’s modernist innovations are examined within the multiple contexts of his expatriation/exile from Poland to Britain via France, his perceived role as a public intellectual and opinion-maker, and his first career as a master mariner who had worked in the service of empire.
