Section Title:
Study Abroad in Rome
Section Info:
Course orientation during the Spring semester includes weekly meetings with the Illinois faculty member leaders and Illinois Study Abroad staff to provide students with foundational knowledge about the Italian public health system and prepare them for the fieldtrip to Italy. Fieldtrip to Italy is planned for May 16 - 31, 2023 and include visits to hospitals, community clinics, research centers, NGOs and universities in Rome, Florence, and Pisa, with tours and talks from high-ranking Italian officials. Studying the Italian public health system in Italy is beneficial to any student interested in health who wants to gain international and cross-cultural experience. Italy’s healthcare system is consistently ranked high. The country has one of the oldest populations in the world and primary care has helped keep people healthy and hospital admissions low. Italy was the first Western country with widespread COVID-19 and was the first to introduce national public health measures such as lockdown, social distancing, and face coverings in public areas. While participating in this study abroad program, students will gain insights into all facets of Italy’s public health and National Healthcare Service (SSN) system. Students will gain insights into international health and be able to make a comparative analysis to the United States. Illinois faculty members with extensive international experience are leading this study abroad program. Students who have participated in this study abroad program said the course and trip were immensely valuable and life changing.
