Topic: The Past on Display: ancient material culture in the modern museum. This course examines the display of ancient art and material culture in the modern museum. We will begin by looking at the emergence of the modern museum as a public institution and explore its complicated and sometimes controversial role in the collection, curation, and display of ancient art and artifacts. We will explore – through a selection of case studies from national, art, and university museums – how the past is and has been represented, taught, and publicly debated. We will also discuss some of the practical, legal, and ethical challenges in the maintenance and display of ancient collections that museums, curators, and other museum professionals face today. Restricted to Art History majors and minors, or other majors with permission of the instructor. This course fulfills the art history seminar requirement. ARTH 395 prerequisite is only recommended, not required.
Restriction(s):
Restricted to History of Art or Art History or Art and Art History major(s) or minor(s).
