Description: This course examines the history of Native peoples through the lens of environmental change. What kinds of relationships did Native Americans have with their natural environments in the past? What kinds of environmental challenges do Native Americans face today? With a focus on the American West, we will learn how these relationships changed over time, after contact with Americans, dispossession and settler colonialism, overharvesting, natural resource development, contamination of landscapes, sacred site protection, and climate change.
